Queen Anne Style Furniture

Queen Anne Oval Amish TableA style of furniture named for Queen Anne, the queen of Great Britain from 1702-1714. Queen Anne was born on February 6, 1665 and died on August 1, 1714. She died because she had gout that she concealed and left untreated resulting in erysipelas, a serve skin infection causing inflammation of the skin, high fevers and the general feeling of illness.

During the reign of Queen Anne, there was an increase in the influence of ministers and a decrease in the influence of the crown marking a change throughout Great Britain as we know it today. Queen Anne was also named for a style of furniture because during her reign there was a significant change in the decorative arts. The Queen Anne style of furniture is full of decoration with carved ornamentation. Generally there is an unity of curved lines with a scalloped shell. The legs are cabriole, a furniture leg shaped in a double curve, with the upper part of the leg curving out, but as the foot draws near the curve swings inward and then flares out again at the foot.

Amish Maple Furniture

Natural Maple Stain on Maple Hardwood Amish Maple Furniture is made from a fine grain hardwood that is a pale brownish yellow color with a random pattern of tiny dark brown circles providing top quality furniture, particularly maple lumber coming from sugar and black maple trees.

Maple trees belong to Acer, a botanical name for maple trees and classified into the plant family called Aceraceae. Maple trees produce a concentrated sap called syrup. The syrup is produced by taking the sap from a maple tree and boiling it until at least 99% of the water has evaporated. Maple syrup is sweet, full of flavor and suitable for eating.

The flowers on a maple tree begins to bud in late winter/early spring and are unnoticeable small. Within a few weeks of the flowers budding, the maple tree drops a large number of seeds better known as helicopters. The leaves are full of vibrant color and provide plenty of shade.

Shaker Style Furniture

Amish Classic Shaker Mule ChestA style of furniture developed by the United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing. These group of individuals became better known as Shakers. Shakers were founded and led by James and Jane Wardley of England, but only grew strong after the appearance of Ann Lee. She and a few followers immigrated to the United States from England in the late 18th Century.

The Skakers pursued self-sufficiency as a group and believed in functionalism. Shakers became well-known for a style of furniture they designed and built, late to become known as Shaker Style furniture. The style was plain, yet elegant, extremely durable and simple in design. Today, Shaker Style furniture remains popular.

Mission Style Furniture

A style of furniture derivative to the Arts and Crafts Movement (1880-1910). The Arts and Crafts Movement was based on the concepts and ideas of John Ruskin and William Morris, philosophers and designers from England. John Ruskin and William Morris’ ideas emphasized simple, clean design style and honest craftsmanship during the time of the Industrial Revolution. The Industrial Revolution marked a major change in technology, civilization and socioeconomics. John Ruskin and William Morris wanted to restore the virtues and craftsmanship of the pre-Industrial Revolution Era.

Mission Style Furniture is an American development of the Arts and Crafts movement largely brought about by Gustave Stickley, an inventor, publisher and furniture manufacturer. Gustave Stickley was a follower of William Morris and his ideas. Mission Style Furniture has a unpretentious, rectangular style with exposed joinery. It also exhibits clean straight lines along with minimal decoration and basic hardware.
